Outdoor Activities in or Near Port Jervis
Looking for something to do on Sabbath afternoon with friends or family? Not from around here and are visiting the area? We’ve compiled a list of outdoor places to visit within 20 minutes of Port Jervis and our church that you can enjoy. During the warmer months, it is great to be able to get outside and spend time in nature enjoying all that God has created with others.
The Hawk’s Nest Overlook
Renowned for its scenic overlook of the Delaware River, it is located along Route 97 in the hamlet of Sparrow Bush, NY in the Hudson Valley. This scenic and winding route offers panoramic views of the countryside and towering views of the Delaware River. It is especially beautiful during peak autumn foliage season. Its unique route was originally designed in the 1920s to offer visitors an immersive experience in the splendor around them. It is accessible by car and offers parking for visitors to stop and take in the views.
Upper Delaware Scenic Byway & Recreational River
This area located along the upper portion of the Delaware River borders New York and Pennsylvania. You can enjoy scenic views along the river and through quaint historic towns such as Narrowsburg and Callicoon. Or you can experience the river by kayaking, canoeing, rafting, and fishing. Hiking and camping are also accessible along different points on the river. There boasts of wildlife with eagles catching fish, osprey soaring overhead, and deer meandering through the woods. There are several pull-offs and parking areas where you can fully enjoy the beauty of nature.
Elks-Brox Memorial Park
Overlooking the town of Port Jervis and the Delaware and Neversink Rivers, you will have beautiful views of rolling hills for miles at the top of park at Point Peter. It offers picnic areas as well as miles of biking and hiking trails that connect with the Port Jervis Watershed Park and Recreation Area.
Port Jervis Watershed Park and Recreation Area
This park helps to protect the water supply for the community as well as the environment it inhabits. Maintained by volunteers of the Outdoor Club of Port Jervis, it offers 307 acres of easy, moderate, and advanced trails for all types of hikers and mountain bikers. There are 5 different locations for public parking and can be viewed through the Outdoor Club of Port Jervis trail map.
